Sony Announces Acquisition of AAA Multiplayer Developer Firewalk Studios

Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) has announced its acquisition of Firewalk Studios, a studio developing an original AAA multiplayer game for PlayStation 5 and PC. Back in April 2021, ProbablyMonsters and Firewalk announced an exclusive publishing partnership with Sony and Firewalk will now become the 20th studio to join PlayStation Studios. The acquisition is part of Sony’s ambition to define a new generation of live service experiences for PlayStation gamers, and Firewalk Studios will collaborate alongside world-class development teams, including Bungie and Haven Interactive Studios, to achieve this goal.

No details about the acquisition or the amount paid was not disclosed because of “contractual commitments.”

Firewalk Studios was formed in 2018 as part of ProbablyMonsters, an independent AAA game company that builds sustainable game teams focusing on original AAA games. Firewalk’s team of developers, led by industry veterans Tony Hsu and Ryan Ellis, combine years of collective expertise on some of gaming’s most successful and impactful multiplayer titles.

Commenting on the deal, President & CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment Jim Ryan said,

“I’m confident the studio’s upcoming project will be a robust addition to PlayStation Studios’ portfolio, and its live service and technology expertise will be instrumental in helping grow PlayStation’s reach.” Hermen Hulst, Head of PlayStation Studios, added, “Firewalk’s innovative approach to connected storytelling and its commitment to high-quality gameplay continues to exceed our expectations. I think fans will be very pleased when they see what Firewalk has in store for them.”

Studio Head of Firewalk Studios Tony Hsu said,

“SIE has supported our team’s vision from the beginning and with the incredible creative power of the PlayStation Studio ecosystem. This exciting next step will help us transform that vision into a reality.” Meanwhile, Harold Ryan, CEO and president of ProbablyMonsters, said, “Our goal at ProbablyMonsters is to find the best path to market for all of our games, and we couldn’t be happier for the Firewalk team.”

The acquisition of Firewalk Studios brings with it around 150 employees and the studio will continue to be run by its management team in collaboration with the PlayStation Studios External Development team.
