It’s been twelve days since the release of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2 premiere. Since its release, speculation about viewership numbers have been rampant and became more fervent ever since domestic numbers were posted by Samba TV and Luminate. Finally, Amazon has posted a tweet, on #TolkienTuesday no less, revealing that The Rings of Power reached 40 million global viewers.
A tweet from the official Rings of Power Twitter account stated,
“With 40 million global viewers and counting, thank you to the fans for making The Rings of Power the #1 @primevideo show in the world.”
While the released information is welcome news for fans, the tweet leaves everyone with more questions than answers. In the tweet, Amazon didn’t specify whether or not the number is for The Rings of Power Season 2 premiere or simply for the entire show since the premiere was released on August 29th.
Neither does the tweet say if this was within the first 24 hours of the Season 2 premiere. Which is what Amazon was quick to do for The Rings of Power Season 1 when it released back in September 2022. At that time, the company was quick to announce that the Season 1 premiere had 25 million global viewers within the first 24 hours of release.
Whether or not the 40 million global viewers is for the first 24 hours of The Rings of Power Season 2 or over the 11-12 days since Season 2 started has yet to be discovered.
For now, all we know is that Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power had 40 million global viewers. Which doesn’t account for how many watched all three episodes to completion versus how many tuned in briefly and stopped watching.
What do you think?
UPDATE: According to Deadline, the 40 million global viewers was garnered over the past 11 days since Season 2 started.
