55 Million Viewers During First Month Of The Rings of Power Season 2, Says Amazon

It’s been 22 days since Amazon revealed that The Rings of Power Season 2 reached 40 million global viewers within its first 11 days and first four episodes. Now it has been revealed that  Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was able to reach 55 million global viewers within its first month, specifically first 34 days, according to Head of Amazon MGM Studios Jennifer Salke as reported by Variety and Deadline. The information was revealed during Amazon’s UK Upfront presentation in London where Salke also stated that the UK is “among the top regions” when it comes to the show’s audience. 

Salke didn’t provide any further details regarding what other regions might be in the top list. However, in addition, Salke revealed that Season 1 reached more than 150 million viewers since its debut two years ago. 

What defines a viewer, at this time, Amazon has failed to quantify so these numbers don’t specify whether or not these are unique viewers, returning watchers, or a combination of both. What the 55 million viewer number does indicate is that Season 2 only saw an increase of 15 million viewers for the next 23 days which is a declined viewer average count of 652,000 viewers per day compared to 3.6 million viewers per day during the first 11 days of the show’s release. The company also didn’t provide any specifics on how much of the show the viewers watched or even provided the total watch time minutes during the presentation. Which means that a number of viewers could have tuned in for one episode compared to someone who has watched all seven episodes released.

Based on the information Amazon has released so far, The Rings of Power Season 2 continues to underperform compared to Season 1. Amazon had revealed that the Season 1 premiere saw 24 million viewers during its first 24 hours. For Season 2, Amazon hasn’t revealed the stats for the first 24 hours, only for the first 11 days for a premiere that was three episodes instead of two. Which means that there is a strong possibility that the Season 2 premiere failed to draw in as many viewers during the first 24 hours as Season 1 did.

According to analytics firms Nielsen, Samba TV, and Luminate, Season 2 has seen a significant drop in viewership compared to Season 1. Samba TV reported a 50% drop in viewership for the Season 2 premiere, Nielsen saw a 47% drop after reporting that the premiere had 1.015 billion minutes watched, and Luminate saw a similar drop during Season 2’s opening week. 

The finale for Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power is scheduled to air this Thursday October 3rd.
