Amazon’s The Rings of Power Sees Further 26% Drop In Minutes Watched, According To Nielsen [UPDATE}

Shortly after Head of Amazon MGM Studios Jennifer Salke spoke with Variety about The Rings of Power, data tracking firm Nielsen has posted its Steaming TV Top 10 list for September 9th thru September 15th. According to Nielsen, Amazon’s The Rings of Power accumulated a total of 747 million minutes in domestic watch time which put it in fifth place.

747 million minutes viewed is a noticeable drop from The Rings of Power Season 2 premiere watch time of 1.015 billion minutes that Nielsen reported for October 26-September 1st. This 26.4% drop in domestic watch time continues the downward trend for The Rings of Power across the board as other data tracking firms such as Luminate and Samba TV have reported.

The new information presented shows a further drop in an already underperforming Season 2 for the fantasy show as the Season 2 premiere saw an estimated 47% drop in viewership numbers, because of longer premiere runtime, from Season 1’s premiere that Nielsen reported as being 1.253 billion minutes viewed back in 2022.

Nielsen’s latest report comes a day after Salke’s interview with Variety in which she reiterated that The Rings of Power had reached 55 million global viewers and was doing fine, though also confirming that the show’s five-season commitment wasn’t a guarantee stating, “We’ll continue to make the show as long as we see global customers loving it and watching it…”

Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has seen a significant decline in viewership despite the company trying to be coy with what little information it puts out. The Rings of Power Season 2 saw a drop in average viewers per day of 3.6 million during the first 11 days, since the premiere launched, to 652, 000 viewers per day for the following 23 days.

Whether or not The Rings of Power will see an uptick in viewership numbers for the Season 2 finale has yet to be seen as no information has been released.

Update: Nielsen also released its The Gauge report which provides an overview of broadcast, cable, and streaming consumption. According to Nielsen, during the month of September Amazon Prime Video saw a 12% bump in viewership primarily driven by Thursday Night Football and The Rings of Power which was in third place for most-watched title with both accounting for the total of 4.3 billion watched minutes. However, Nielsen didn’t break down the minutes as to how much was attributed to Football or Amazon’s fantasy show and especially how much watchtime was split between Season 1 and Season 2.
