The War of the Rohirrim anime film is set to release December 13th in the United States and indications are not looking good for the next Lord of the Rings film from Warner Bros. Shockingly, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim saw an early global release and is looking rather grim for the anime film having pulled in around $2 million for the global box office during its opening weekend stunting its charge onto the global stage.
According to Box Office Pro, The War of the Rohirrim brought in an estimated $2 million during the soft opening across countries such as Spain, Mexico, Brazil, and 28 smaller territories with a total of 3,410 screens showing the animated movie. That’s an average of around $587 per theater for the movie which was released December 5th for these countries.
Of course, major territories such as China, and 28 other territories, will see the international release sooner than domestic territories starting December 11th. Even then, the reception for The War of the Rohirrim is to be questioned given the slate of movies competing during the animated film’s opening weekend. This includes Moana 2, which brought in around $52 million for its third week in theaters and Wicked, which pulled in around $34.85 million during its third week. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures’ Kraven the Hunter will also be released December 13th directly competing with The War of the Rohirrim for box office receipts though reception for the movie has been lackluster.
These three films, as stated in a previous editorial about how The War of the Rohirrim will struggle to reach $10 million domestically during its opening weekend, will certainly draw away the younger crowd that Rohirrim is competing for worldwide. In Japan, there is the added competition of anime Solo Leveling – ReAwakening which will hurt Rohirrim’s prospects in that country. Though competition is not the only reason for why Rohirrim is expected to be a box office flop.
However, it doesn’t stop there for Rohirrim. Competition for the box office will ramp up as movies such as Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King will be released a week after The War of the Rohirrim’s opening weekend. Further stunting the animated film’s potential total box office numbers domestically and globally.
Will The War of the Rohirrim flop or succeed at the box office has been a topic of speculation for a while now. Especially since its box office performance could have a major impact on future Lord of the Rings projects, specifically for Warner Bros which has been playing around with the idea for a new movie titled The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum.
