Sports Franchise and Split Faction Factored Into Strong Q4 Earnings For EA Amidst Layoffs and Overall Yearly Decrease in 2024

2024 was an insane year for the videogame industry as a lot of triple-A games were released and went on to flop for a variety of reasons. Unsurprisingly, developers, publishers, and even games journalists tried to play off these failures through positive spins on dismal numbers or simply ignore the fact. Unfortunately, the facts can only be hidden for so long. EA certainly was in the middle of this with regards to BioWare’s game and, during its Q3 earnings report, revealed that Dragon Age: The Veilguard had not performed well. Now, Electronic Arts’ Q4 earnings report is out and has shown that, while the quarter was up, the Full Year numbers were down and Veilguard is nowhere to be seen.

Here are the basic numbers.

Q4 numbers (ended 03/31/2025):

  • Revenue: $1,895 billion (up from $1,779 billion year-on-year)
  • Net income: $254 million (up from $182 million year-on-year)
  • Net bookings: $1,895 billion (up from $1,779 year-on-year)

Full-year numbers:

  • Revenue: $7,463 billion (down from $7,562 billion year-on-year)
  • Net income: $1,121 billion (down from $1,273 billion year-on-year)
  • Net bookings: $7,355 billion (down from $7,430 billion year-on-year)

Obviously, EA took a major hit from Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s poor sales performance which the company never disclosed. Only that, during a Q3 earnings report, Veilguard had failed to meet expectations by 50% as it only engaged with 1.5 million players while EA had expected that number to be 3 million.

During the Q4 report, Veilguard was completely ignored while the company was happy to point out Split Fiction’s success and even provided the sales, not player, numbers which were nearly 4 million copies. While Split fiction’s was the main factor for growth in Q4, the company’s American football franchise saw growth for EA Sports FC and The Sims’ 30% net bookings growth as the other primary factors.

In 2024, EA underwent a massive restructuring which saw 670 workers laid off company-wide. Early in 2025, another round of cuts occurred with 300 employees removed that included 100 from developer Respawn and the cancellation of a new Titanfall game. In addition, BioWare is also undergoing restructuring due to Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s disappointing performance according to BioWare General Manager Gary McKay in a post published January 29, 2025.
