As gamers, there are times when we are so engrossed in taking out The Combine that we tend to ignore the urge to get up and eat anything. By the time we finally take a break, our stomachs are growling so loudly that it could drown out a Boomer. Yet we don’t want to stop playing just to eat. Instead, we’d rather bring our plate of food, or snacks, back with us so that we can continue playing. I know I do.
Sure, our friends and family tend to misinterpret this as gamers being anti-social or rude. But I look at it as being efficient by not wasting time at the dinner table, making idle chitchat, that could be spent playing my games. Besides, I’d rather be calling people over the net illogical nerfherders rather than make idle chitchat anyways.
However, there is a problem when it comes to combining eating and gaming. While we can watch a movie, TV show, or even read a book uninterrupted while eating most foods, gaming is a a more demanding and fickle mistress. After all, for most games, you are using both of your hands to use your console controller or the mouse/keyboard combination.
Now what foods are suitable for gaming? Well, that is the purpose of Food for Gaming. I am going to be reviewing different kinds of foods in order to determine whether or not they can be eaten, while gaming, without really hindering your game play or ruining your controllers. And I am sure that when it comes to gaming peripherals, everyone will agree with me that no one likes to mess them up. Nothing irks me more than seeing my mouse/keyboard, controller, joystick, arcade stick, or even a trackball mouse (some people still use these for some reason).
So there will have to be a set of criteria to judge by. After all, if you want to eat and game, at the same time, you will need to be able to sneak in a bite here and there, with one hand, while still playing the game without pausing or there is a lull in the action. Now in order to figure this out, I will be grading each food item under 4 categories while using a 1-5 scale. The scale will indicate how bad or how excellent the featured item is to eat (1 = bad and 5 = excellent). To make this determination, the four categories used will be Deliciousness, Handling, Finger Residue, and Forkability.
The verdict will not be an averaging of the various scores. Because it wouldn’t make any sense. Instead, the verdict will rely on various factors while focusing on Finger Residue and handling more than Deliciousness and Forkability.
In essence, I want to find the best food that will not hinder my ability to play or make a mess of my gaming peripherals.
