Knightly Musings: Support The #StargateSuperdrive Tonight, Help A Great Sci-fi Franchise Return

There have been a lot of great sci-fi shows over the decades. And there have certainly been a fair number of them over the last ten years. But sadly, it appears to be hard and almost impossible for a sci-fi show to have any kind of longevity. Thankfully, the Stargate franchise was not one of them. It was one of the longest-running sci-fi shows with three series, a web series, three movies, and even an animated series. Sadly, MGM hasn’t done anything with the franchise in a while. So fans, former writers, and former cast and crew are starting a drive tonight, Friday (12/06) at 9:00pm EST to get #StargateSuperdrive trending on Twitter to remind MGM that there is an audience for more Stargate.

These days, sci-fi shows have become rather dark and gritty (pretty much the case for Fantasy as well). But don’t get me wrong, Shows like The Expanse are great. But what made Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis phenomenal was a perfect blend of humor and campiness along with serious tones and dramatic moments. Currently, you have The Orville which has that perfect blend and it is the only Scifi series like that at the moment. There are only so many dark and gritty shows that the audience needs. And it was one of the faults of Stargate: Universe though, eventually, the show did start to grow on me with the second season. But alas, it was too little too late. The show was expensive and not drawing the numbers it needed when it was out. However, I attribute the latter reason due to it being on the SyFy channel.

We need more sci-fi shows like The Orville and Stargate. Life isn’t always dark and gritty. There is a real need for a bit of camp and humor; a more positive outlook on things in this genre right now. And Stargate has done that and can still do that. It has a loyal and and strong fanbase. It’s the kind of fanbase that kept Star Trek: The Original Series going and helped get the movies started.

This is a fanbase that, for eight years, has been waiting for MGM to do something with the franchise.

And I would encourage you to watch the following video which does a great job explaining what has been going on with the franchise since the cancellation of Stargate: Universe.

Personally, the Stargate franchise is one of my all-time favorite sci-fi franchises out there. I own all the shows on DVD or Blu-Ray and I tend to binge watch it all every couple of years. I never get tired of watching this show.

It’s also one of the shows I loved so much that I actually wrote down some ideas for episodes (though I never followed through with those ideas). And seeing the efforts by the fans to get MGM to realize that there is still interest in it has inspired me to take a stab at writing the opening for a new series.

So if you have never seen an episode of Stargate or the original movie that inspired the franchise, you should take the time to check it out. For those of you who have never seen it, but love the sci-fi genre, then show your support for the Stargate #Superdrive on Twitter tonight (12/06/2019) starting at 9:00pm EST/6:00pm PST and help it trend on Twitter.
