When it comes to “The Bath Song,” I can’t help but smile about it. The words are basic, silly, and it was one of my first attempts at writing a song. I wrote this about 20 years ago and, to this day, I still sing it to myself. Why I even decided to write this was because I had been playing an MMO called Dark Age of Camelot(DAoC) and, at the time, I felt the urge to come up with a song or two to sing while I was fighting other players ingame.
Come to think of it, if my memory hasn’t failed me, DAoC was the first videogame where I started to do some roleplaying. While RPing in the game, I wanted to come up with some phrases, traits, or quirks that would make my experience more individualistic. Well, one of the things I’d like to do, if I wasn’t PvPing and just hanging around, was to place my character in a fountain and make it look like he was taking a bath.
It was silly, stupid, but I always got a reaction out of people that might stumble across my character doing this. So I decided that I needed to expand upon this quirk and came up with The Bath Song which I would then type out in the game’s local chat. Now, I’ve been tempted to record myself singing this but there is only so far I am willing to go to embarrass myself. Maybe, one day, I’ll save up some money and hire someone to record the vocals and compose a simple arrangement for it. But aside from a few random players who would stand around and read what I typed out, I never really shared it to anyone. Let alone sing it in front of anyone!
So for now, people can just read the lyrics and make fun of it. Personally, even after all this time, I feel that the last stanza needs to be re-worked.
In the meantime, I’ll keep singing this to myself while I am in the shower.
Of course, this isn’t the first time I have been inspired by a videogame. For those who have listened to the Knight Writer Podcast, which has been on hiatus for the past couple of years, you will know that one of my WIPs, “Forget Me Not, Father,” started out originally as a videogame concept before I decided to turn it into a novel.
So what about you? Have you written something that was just for you and no one else? Something that you think is too stupid or silly that you would be embarrassed to share with anyone?

The Bath Song
Oh hidely-ho, hideley-hee
The bath is the place for me
It brings back such sweet memories
That I never want to leave
I was walking down the road one day
Singing this same song
When I espied a maiden far away
In nothing but a thong
I ran straight up and said my name
She looked at me and screamed
She slapped me right across the face
And knocked me in the stream
Oh hidely-ho, hideley-hee
The bath is the place for me
It brings back such sweet memories
That I never want to leave
I stood straight up, soaking wet
She look at me and laughed
And in her own sweet sounding voice
Told me I was daft
She said I was a peeping Tom
I told her she was right
For how could I resist the sight of her in the broad daylight
Oh hidely-ho, hideley-hee
The bath is the place for me
It brings back such sweet memories
That I never want to leave
Quickly I went to her side
And told her of my love
She gaped at me
And couldn’t believe
What I had told her of
She looked as if about to run
I grabbed here then and there
She slapped me right across the cheek
And I ended up guess where?
Oh hidely-ho, hideley-hee
The bath is the place for me
It brings back such sweet memories
That I never want to leave
Once again I stood up straight
All mirth now gone away
I told her that I loved her so
And would she marry me that day
She said a simple yes to me
I took off then and there
To find myself a holy priest
To marry us can you guess where
Oh hidely-ho, hideley-hee
The bath is the place for me
It brings back such sweet memories
That I never want to leave
Many years have passed away
And together we are still
We’re happy as a pair of clams
And I’m the envy of every man
But whenever we go by a stream
In her eye there appears a gleam
She’ll slap me right across the face
And knock me in the stream
Oh hidely-ho, hideley-hee
The bath is the place for me
It brings back such sweet memories
That I never want to leave
