Disney has been woke for a while and, as most cases go, is starting to go broke. From destroying the Star Wars franchise to releasing flop (Lightyear) after flop (Strange World) after flop (The Little Mermaid), after flop (Elemental), Mouse town is burning down. The latest woke offering from the House of Mouse is the new Snow White (2024) movie. The main problem is that the casting of Snow White doesn’t match the origin of the character’s name and photos from the set have been making the rounds, which Disney officially denied only to recant and later say that these are unofficial photos.
Right now, Disney has lost $900 million in box office woke flops that includes the aforementioned movies with Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny most likely joining the roster. Not to mention recent underperforming movies and shows from the Marvel Cinematic Universe which has been dubbed the M-She-U by unhappy Marvel fans.
So it should come as no surprise that the casting for Disney’s new live-action Snow White movie will put people off from going to see it. Why? One reason could be that this version of Snow white will not have Prince Charming or the Huntsman. Instead, it will have a new male character bring to question how far does an adaptation have to stray from the source material to no longer be considered an adaptation. However, the main focus is that the casting for the movie doesn’t make sense for the story. Especially for the character of Snow White whose name is literally derived from the color of her skin.
Don’t believe me? Allow me to quote the original Snow White from Grimm’s Fairy Tales,
“One snowy winter day, a queen sat at the window sewing on a frame made of ebony. She pricked her finger with the needle, and three drops of blood fell in the snow on the windowsill.
The red blood looked so beautiful against the white snow that the queen exclaimed, ‘I wish I had a daughter as white as snow, red as blood, and black as ebony.’
A short time later the queen gave birth to a daughter whose skin was as white as snow, whose cheeks were red as blood, and whose hair was black as ebony. She named her child Snow White and not long after, the queen died.”
Pretty cut and dry as to how Snow White got her name. Yet, for Disney, simple facts like this won’t stop them from marching down the yellow woke road to Mount Doom. Nor does it stop the rest of Woke Hollywood as we have seen with Netflix’s The Witcher, Wizards of the Coast’s new Middle-earth card set for Magic: The Gathering, Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power, and other woke offerings from Hollywood in general. Meanwhile, their hypocrisy deepens when there was no backlash from the Left when Disney changed the character of the Ancient One from a male, Tibetan character into a white woman. Instead, the backlash for this change came from Marvel fans.
Of course, one of the main arguments that Leftists and social justice warriors love to make is that the original sources don’t describe their characters as having a certain color of skin. That even though settings and inspiration is set in or derived from European culture, that it doesn’t necessarily mean that the characters are white.
Which is the most ludicrous argument to make.
Even then, when the source describes a character as being pale or fair, these people continue to argue. Such as the recent case for Wizard’s of the Coast making beloved Tolkien characters such as Aragorn, Galadriel, Eowyn, and Merry black.
Another one of the arguments made is the fact that these movies and shows are just fantasy. “It is fantasy” is pretty much a rallying cry for them to explain why it is okay to POC-wash existing characters. This coming from the same people who shriek about the white-washing of characters. Unless we are talking about the aforementioned change to the Ancient One.
Yet, it doesn’t happen to just fantasy characters and worlds. We’ve seen Woke Hollywood black-washing Cleopatra for a Netflix Documentary series that even the Egyptian government took umbrage with and is trying to sue Netflix. The popular Vikings tv series not only black-washed Jarl Haakon Sigurdsson, a white historical figure, but also gender-swapped him. They also black-washed Anne Boleyn.
These aren’t fantasy characters. These are historical figures getting the same POC-washing treatment that characters of color got at one point.
Personally, I don’t like white-washing or POC-washing. I just want adaptations to be faithful to the source material. Especially historical figures and settings.
They also don’t seem to realize that just because the story of Snow White is similar to stories from other cultures, that the character should be changed. Instead, they should be arguing that those versions should be made. Whether Greek, Italian, or African (what is the African story that is equivalent to Snow White).
What astounds me is that Disney obviously wants to cater to the Hispanic demographic. Yet, why take a German story and cast a Latina? Hispanic culture is filled with its own legends and stories that American audiences would enjoy. Encanto, West Side Story (1961), Coco, The Mask of Zorro, Rio, and more have been enjoyed by American audiences. Of course, the fact that the actress Rachel Zegler was cast is not the issue. The issue is that she doesn’t fit the description. At least, not when seeing the unofficial set photos. In fact, I bet there would have been very little backlash if Disney had cast a white Hispanic actress who fits the physical description of Snow White. Which, to be fair, Zegler almost looks to fit the role in the photo taken from West Side Story yet doesn’t look anywhere close to Snow White in the alleged set photo.
Yet, Disney wasn’t intelligent enough to do that.
You would think that this would be all for the movie. But the changes didn’t stop there. In the name of Diversity the 7 Dwarves have been changed to various shades of color, and one gender-swapped. But the biggest surprise? Only one actor appears to be an actual Dwarf from the picture provided.
Suffice to say, I am really tired of “diversity” and “inclusion” in movies and shows both fantastical and realistic that ignore the source material and historical facts in general. This needs to stop and, hopefully, Disney’s new Snow White (2024) will be the next linchpin for the House of Mouse. Otherwise, we need to go back to white-washing characters just to tick off Leftist snowflakes. How about Ryan Gosling as Black Panther? Or remake The Woman King and replace them all with White, Hispanic, and Asian actors and actresses? Maybe even gender-swap the main character?
That’s how it works, right? Or just give us new intellectual properties that explore the stories and legends of other cultures without resorting to white-washing, diversity, and inclusivity as selling points.
Just give us some great stories.
