Amazon’s The Rings of Power Season 2’s First Episode Sees 50% Drop In Viewership Numbers According To Samba TV

The season 2 premiere for Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power aired August 29th and speculation about the show’s success has been hotly contested. Information about viewership numbers has started to be posted with television technology company Samba TV being the first to release their results. According to Samba TV, Season 2 episode 1 for Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power saw a 50% drop in viewership numbers compared to Season 1 episode 1.

Samba TV, which compiles its numbers from 48 million addressable TV devices, said that season 2 episode 1 saw 902,000 viewers during the first five days. However, that is 50% lower than season 1 episode 1’s numbers which, according to the company, had 1.8 million viewers within the first four days. What is even more interesting is that it took S02E01 five days to reach 902,000 viewers and only four days for S01E1 to reach the 1.8 million viewer mark. But the result, according to Samba TV, is that the Rings of Power saw a loss of 898,000 viewers from season to season.

The Rings of Power season 2 has seen a lot of criticism and lackluster reception from Tolkien fans and the general audience, with the response of critics being a mixed bag compared to season 1. On Rotten Tomatoes, the Tomatometer is at 84% while the Popcornmeter sits at 59% at the time of this article being posted. Meanwhile, Metacritic’s Metascore is much lower at 67% and User Score at 4.1.

At this time, no information has been released by Nielsen TV, another major company that collects information from its own audience measurement system. Nor has Amazon yet to release any official numbers about the show’s premiere which included the first three episodes of season 2.

Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power season 1 saw a 37% viewership retention rate in the US and a 50% retention rate globally. Considering the huge drop for Season 2, it will be interesting to see if the numbers pick up or continue to fall or increase for episodes two and three, not to mention the rest of the season.
