Nielsen Shows Estimated 47% Decline For Amazon’s The Rings of Power Season 2 Premiere

Viewing numbers for Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has been released by Nielsen and paints a similar picture to what Luminate and Samba TV have posted. According to Nielsen’s analytics, The Rings of Power Season 2 premiere brought in 1.015 billion minutes watched.

Back in 2022, Nielsen reported that The Rings of Power Season 1 premiere garnered 1.253 billion minutes. A seemingly slight drop of around 18% when you compare the minutes watched between Season 1 and Season 2. However, there are a couple of variables to take into consideration – total runtime.

The Rings of Power Season 1 premiere was two episodes with a 132 minutes combined runtime compared to Season 2 which had three episodes and a total runtime of 204 minutes. Divide Nielsen’s total minutes watched by each premiere’s total runtime and Season 1 saw 9.4 million viewers while season 2 amounted to 4.9 million viewers – a 47% drop in viewership numbers.

Nielsen’s findings come close to what SambaTV reported with a 50% drop in viewership between Season 1 and Season 2. Luminate’s results showed a huge drop according to their analytics which saw Season 1 with 1.2 billion watch time minutes with around 8.9 million views compared to Season 2’s premiere of 553.5 million watch time minutes and an estimated 2.7 million viewers.

These estimated numbers do not account for the viewers who didn’t watch the premieres in their entirety and only accounts for domestic viewers.

In light of Nielsen’s findings, The official Rings of Power X Account tweeted,

“1 billion minutes watched in the first week in the US, according to Nielsen. Our international viewer number is about three times the US audience so thank you to the global fans for continuing to make The Rings of Power #1 worldwide on Prime Video!”

However, no specific numbers were provided by the account. As for Amazon, the company announced that The Rings of Power Season 2 saw 40 million global viewers within 11 days. Another potentially large drop in global views when compared to Season 1 where Amazon declared that 25 million global viewers tuned in during the first 24 hours. Amazon hasn’t released any further details prompting debate on whether or not the company is obfuscating when it comes to the show’s statistics.

But the prevailing trend is that The Rings of Power Season 2 is underperforming significantly compared to Season 1 and given further credence to assumptions that the show is a flop.

What do you think the viewership numbers both domestically and globally will be for Season 2?
