BioWare’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard Experiences 44% Player Count Decline During Launch Week on Steam

It has been a week since Dragon Age: The Veilguard was released and there hasn’t been a lot of information about its performance from BioWare and EA. However, SteamDB data indicates that BioWare’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard’s player count continued to decline from its peak of 88,418 players down to 48,744 players a week later on Steam – a 44% decline in players.

Veilguard, an action roleplaying game, was released on October 31st and managed to reach 70,414 concurrent players on the Steam platform. Most mainstream journalists deemed this a successful milestone for BioWare and EA as one of their best-selling single player games to date on Steam. Expectations were that Veilguard would hit the six figure mark during its opening weekend as the game’s release date had landed on Halloween.

However, Veilguard failed to reach 100,000 players on Steam during its opening weekend, peaking at 89,418 players on Sunday. As its launch week progressed peak player count declined until, a week later, Veilguard’s player count was 48,744 – a 44% decline from launch day.

Steam ownership numbers, though not exact, increased from the most generous estimate of 429,000 during opening weekend to 577,000 through the week for a 34% increase. Despite the increase, there was a spike in Steam refund requests during Veilguard’s opening weekend though what percentage of the 399,558 was for BioWare’s game is unknown or if that was accounted for in the sales estimate.

Another factor to note is that, as of November 9th, only 3.9% of players have reached the end for Dragon Age: The Veilguard, according to Steam’s global achievement stats. There are 14 parts in total with part 1 showing 86.4% of players getting the achievement. Though, given the length of the game, this could increase as its second weekend approaches where players will have more time to progress through the game.

EA and BioWare have remained silent as to how many copies Dragon Age: The Veilguard has sold so far. Veilguard is also available on PlayStation and XBOX consoles which could be seeing more success than the Steam version, but there is no way to verify that. It is also possible that Dragon Age: The Veilguard could see a resurgence on Steam as it goes into its second weekend, but there is early speculation that Veilguard is already another flop for BioWare and EABut if Steam’s data is an accurate barometer, then the sales figures for Veilguard could be well below expectations for BioWare and EA.

Why Dragon Age: The Veilguard is seeing a decline in player numbers is up for speculation. Though many point to its departure from previous Dragon Age games as a turnoff for some fans.
