I haven’t been using ChatGPT much for anything. Every now and then I will go back to it to see if the AI has gotten any better and, in my opinion, it really hasn’t. It still sounds like a censored libtard and PR machine when it comes to the most basic requests such as asking it to write a news article. But, given the recent argument over Naughty Dog’s latest game announcement, Intergalactic The Heretic Prophet, and its main protagonist, Jordan, I couldn’t help myself and asked ChatGPT to describe the character.
When I first saw Jordan, I immediately thought they looked like an androgynous, Asian woman who might have been a Mongolian with a snarky attitude. I couldn’t tell you why I immediately thought Mongolian, just that it popped into my head. I’m not exactly enthused by the look of the character and I am certainly wary given the direction Naughty Dog has gone in as a studio, but I am not completely ready to strike the game from my list (a debate for another time).
But I was curious what an AI would say about the character. So I grabbed a screenshot and presented it to ChatGPT to see what it had to say while not providing any specific details about it in my opening question.
When asked to analyze and describe the person in the following picture ChatGPT replied,
“The image shows a person with a shaved head and a confident, relaxed demeanor. They are wearing a sleeveless gray tank top, revealing numerous tattoos on their arms, neck, and chest. The tattoos include birds on the chest, intricate designs on the forearms, and text or symbols on the upper arm. The person has a strong, athletic build, and their expression appears calm and engaging, as if they are in the middle of a conversation. They are holding a small, rectangular device in one hand, which could be a remote control or similar item.
The lighting in the image is soft and moody, suggesting an indoor setting, possibly a bedroom or a private space. In the background, there is a bed with a pillow and blanket, along with subtle, out-of-focus details that add to the intimate and personal atmosphere of the scene.”
What was immediately apparent is that ChatGPT didn’t bother to talk about the character’s gender or ethnicity which I found to be not surprising. Though I was surprised that it did mention birds as one of the tattoos on Jordan if nothing else.
But I wasn’t surprised at its reply to my question about the person’s ethnicity and even reworded the question to try and extract a response.
This is where ChatGPT adhered to its Leftist’s roots. Refusing to answer anything in regards to gender or race. Like a Leftist who has been the victim of a crime but, when asked to provide details of the criminal by a policeman, won’t say anything specific because it might be racist, sexist, and offensive. Even if that means the criminal gets away with the theft, sexual assault, or worse.
So I was surprised when ChatGPT actually gave me an answer when queried about the character’s gender though the answer was vague.
“The person in the image appears to have a traditionally androgynous appearance, and their gender is not immediately clear based solely on visual cues. They exhibit traits that could align with various gender expressions, such as a shaved head, tattoos, and an athletic build. Without further context, I can’t definitively determine their gender.”
I ended the discussion there with ChatGPT, but I wasn’t done yet. Recently Grok, which is an artificial intelligence created by xAI, was made available to everyone for free and I decided to ask similar questions and see what answers would be provided.
When asked the same opening question, Grok gave a similar answer to ChatGPT,
“The individual in the image appears to be in a casual setting, possibly indoors. They are wearing a sleeveless tank top and have several tattoos visible on their arms and neck. The tattoos include various designs and symbols, which might suggest a personal interest in body art or a significant meaning behind each tattoo.
The person is holding a small device in their right hand, which resembles a remote control or a small electronic device. This could indicate they are either about to interact with some technology or have just finished doing so. The background shows a dimly lit room with some furniture, including a bed and shelves, suggesting a relaxed, home-like environment.
Overall, the individual seems to present a laid-back, possibly introspective demeanor, indicated by their posture and the setting.”
Unlike ChatGPT, Grok didn’t provide any specific details about the tattoo or even the physical characteristics.
But when I asked Grok what it thought the character’s ethnicity might be based on their physical appearance, I was surprised by its answer,
“Based on the visible physical traits, the individual in the image most closely resembles someone of African descent. This assessment is based on the skin tone, hair texture, and facial features, although without more context, this is an educated guess rather than a definitive conclusion. Remember, appearance alone isn’t always indicative of someone’s ethnicity due to the diversity within ethnic groups.”
To say that I had to do a double-take is putting it lightly and I even asked myself “Is Jordan Asian?” Because I was not expecting “African” to be Grok’s answer. But I guess the darkened atmosphere would give the character a darker skin tone. The nose as well could be an indication of African ancestry so I asked Grok what specific facial features led it to assume African ancestry after I provided another picture with brighter lighting.
Grok replied,
“When assessing physical traits that might suggest African descent, here are some specific features that can be considered:
- Skin Tone: While skin color alone isn’t definitive, it’s a common trait. The individual in the image has a darker skin tone, which is often associated with African ancestry.
- Facial Features:
- Nose Shape: African-descended individuals often have broader noses with wider nostrils.
- Lips: Fuller lips are another common trait among people of African descent.
- Hair Texture: The individual appears to have a shaved head, but the hair texture, when visible, can also be a clue. African hair is often denser and can be coiled or kinky.
- Body Structure:
- Build: The muscular build can be common across many ethnicities but can also be noted in African-descended individuals, especially in contexts where physical strength and athleticism are culturally valued.
- Cultural Indicators:
- Tattoos: While tattoos can be from any culture, certain styles or symbols might hint at cultural influences, but this is less of a physical trait and more of a cultural indicator.”
These traits are not exclusive to any one ethnicity and can be found in various populations around the world due to the diversity and intermingling of human genetics. However, when combined, these features can often be associated with African descent.
Remember, ethnicity is not just about physical appearance but also involves cultural, genetic, and historical factors. The assessment here is based on visible physical traits and cultural indicators, but without direct knowledge of the individual’s background, this remains an educated guess.”
Could Grok be right? I don’t think so. But perhaps Jordan could be mixed race that combines African and Asian races: similar to Half-Life 2’s Alyx Vance? But it still doesn’t seem that likely. While the nose could indicate African ancestry, I can’t help but think about actor Benedict Wong, when he portrayed Kublai Khan in the Marco Polo Netflix series, which is what made me think Mongolian in the first place. Though, if she is mixed race, then I am disappointed. I love mixed race women because they can be some of the most beautiful women like Halle Berry, Alicia Keys, Katrina Law, Zendaya, Valkyrae, and Olivia Munn to name a few. But, to be blunt, Jordan would not be anywhere on that list.
Of course, considering the developer is Naughty Dog, I am assuming Jordan Mun’s gender to be female. Though, given their appearance, the character probably is designed to be identified as they/them. Another discussion for another day. I’m also not a fan of the androgynous look, like we see with Assassin’s Creed: Shadows’ Naoe, which is the alternative to the overtly-masculine looking female protagonists gamers have been getting these days.
I guess we will have to wait and see what Naughty Dog has to say about their Jordan A. Mun in Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.
So what do you think Jordan A. Mun’s ancestry is? Obviously, with that last name, there has to be at least some Asian ancestry. But is she entirely Asian, mixed race, African as Grok suggests, or something else?
