For gamers looking to start off 2025 by playing a new game, yet reliving the past, then Beyond Citadel is the game you might want to pick up which has trumpeted its arrival on Steam today. The single-player first-person shooter combines anime aesthetics with the realistic gunplay mechanics of classic shooters, offering a blend of nostalgia with some modern twists.
Created by Japanese indie developer Doekuramori, Beyond Citadel is set in a dystopian future where the last human stronghold, the Citadel, has succumbed to the malevolent forces known as the Trumpeters of the Apocalypse. Players take on the role of the “Martyr,” a female character who is guided by a mysterious signal to uncover secrets beneath the Citadel and overthrow the tyrannical rulers.
A sequel to The Citadel, Beyond Citadel features 2.5D graphics with its anime-style meshing well with the 90s shooter such as DOOM and Wolfenstein 3D. But, unlike the old “boomer” shooters, you will be able to jump and lean side-to-side to get better shots on your opponents. To further help your future waifu make it through her ordeal, the game also provides a range of weapons from black powder firearms to advanced energy weapons and even melee for those wishing to get up close and personal with the enemy.

- Diverse Environments: The game’s world includes both indoor and outdoor handcrafted levels, where players will battle through foot soldiers, armored vehicles, and terrifying creatures, all within the fortress’s sprawling confines.
- Narrative and Characters: Players will discover that they’re not alone as they will discover allies who provide assistance, fleshing out the story and gameplay. The atmospheric setting features intense, destructive effects, painting the picture of a dark, futuristic world on the brink of collapse.
Similar to the old 90s shooters, Beyond Citadel features the violent and bloody dismemberment of your enemies. Players will be able to watch in satisfaction as limbs, torsos, and heads scatter around as you shoot and pummel your enemies. However, if the thought of killing enemies who look like your future waifu is disturbing, then you might not be able to handle this indie game.
