Ubisoft’s controversial game Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been delayed to March 20, 2025. This is the second delay for the next installment for the Assassin’s Creed franchise that was originally scheduled to release November 12, 2024.
The official Assassin’s Creed X account tweeted a post written by Assassin’s Creed executive producer Marc-Alexis Côté which stated,
“Dear players,
We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to our incredible fans and dedicated teams for your unwavering support since our announcement in September to further refine and polish Assassin’s Creed Shadows.
Since November, we’ve been thrilled to share our progress through Gameplay, Overviews, and the overwhelming excitement has truly inspired us. Each week has brought valuable feedback from our community. While we’ve already made remarkable strides, we believe a few additional weeks are needed to implement that feedback and ensure an even more ambitious and engaging day-one experience.
Accordingly, the new release date is March 20, 2025. We remain committed to delivering a high-quality, immersive experience–fostered by ongoing dialogue between our players and development teams.
We know you’re eager to learn more about Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and we’re excited to share that more updates will be coming your way very soon!”
Originally scheduled to be released November 12 of least year, the date was pushed back to February 14, 2025 in the wake of backlash, criticisms, and many issues involving the cultural appropriation, cultural insensitivity, and copyright infringement of Japanese culture and organizations that resulted in a Japanese petition to cancel Assassin’s Creed Shadows, government investigation, and outrage from citizens.
While the development team offered no specific details as to why Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been delayed for a second time, the new date still falls within the first fiscal quarter of 2025 (QY1).
At the same time of the announcement, Ubisoft released a “Strategic Update” for its investors about what the company is doing to do in order to “enhance operational efficiency and maximize value creation,” with Ubisoft co-founder and CEO Yves Guillemot commenting on the game’s delay saying,
“Additionally, we are all behind our teams’ efforts to create the most ambitious Assassin’s Creed opus of the franchise and made the decision to provide an extra month of development to Shadows in order to better incorporate the player feedback gathered over the past three months that will enable us to fully deliver on the potential of the game and finish the year on a strong note.”
2024 was a bad year for Ubisoft as the company released a number of games, including Star Wars Outlaws, which all flopped due to a variety of reasons that centered around poor optimization, lackluster gameplay, and pushing a “woke agenda.” Reasons for which Assassin’s Creed Shadows has also been criticized for, including the developer’s non-apology to the Japanese community, Ubisoft declaring that historical figure Yasuke was also a samurai, which could be why the game continues to be delayed.
