If you’ve been looking for a retro-style RPG with a twist, then Astral Throne could be what you are looking for. Out now on Steam, Astral Throne is a roguelike strategy RPG that features a turn-based grid combat system similar to Final Fantasy Tactics and Fire Emblem. However, due to its roguelike system, the game’s replayability puts it on par with games such as FTL in how random and different each play session can be.
Developed by indie developer Zero Sun Games, Astral Throne is set on an island kingdom that was struck by a mysterious shooting star. Upon the shooting star’s impact, the once-prosperous kingdom became engulfed in a memory-stealing fog which affected everyone, both royalty and peasants alike.
Players will have to explore this procedurally generated, fog-covered kingdom and discover what has happened while fighting along the way. To help combat and survive deadly encounters, players will have to build up their army by recruiting characters you meet along the way. Each character can become stronger through loot and level-ups with hundreds of skills, weapons, items, and over a dozen classes that provide a large variety of options for your party.
Just remember, while these characters strength will also revolve around weapon and magic triangles, in addition to stat and experience distribution, the game also has permadeath. There are no phoenix downs in this game to bring your dead characters back to life.
If that wasn’t all, each playthrough will be different as the map is procedurally generated and each run changes depending on the characters you recruit into your party. There are also over a hundred story branches and two dozen unique endings for players to experience as they uncover a mysterious plot.
Astral Throne is now available on Steam for $19.99 (currently on sale for $17.99 until February 14th).
