For those who already know, my work-in-progress, The Flames of Elysium, started out as a short story for a Starcraft Fanfiction contest (you can read the rough drafts for the prologue and first three chapters here). After not winning, which didn’t surprise me because the ending was horrible among other things, I decided to flesh out the story more and, at the very least, make it the length of a novella. So I incorporated the story into a universe I created where an interstellar government called the Galactic Federation of United Planets was the primary power in our part of the galaxy.
Prior to changing the story, I had already created a backstory for the GFP in which its origin begins in our modern time. While I always considered maybe writing a book about it, I still don’t have enough of it fleshed out to dedicate that kind of time. However, it was interesting hearing President Donald Trump issuing an Executive Order declaring the Mexican cartels as terrorist organizations which I wholeheartedly approve of.
But the President’s announcement is what made me think back to my origin story for the GFP (no one adds the U unless the government screws up).
You see, the founder of the GFP needed to collect a lot of money to implement his plan that he thought would jumpstart his vision for a Star Trek-like world. However, he didn’t like to take things too seriously, so he wanted to give it the pretentious, long-winded name of the Galactic Federation of United Planets (he wanted people to pronounce the acronym as goof-up if it did something they didn’t like).
The man’s idea was to leave Earth and head for the triple star system called Gliese 667C (I chose that system because it has three livable planets). However, in order to make his vision a reality, he would need to raid Area 51 where he knows that the US government has an alien spacecraft that they don’t want anyone to know about. His reasoning for this was to get their hands on the alien tech and he could hire the best and brightest, who shared his vision, to discover all of its secrets and then build a ship to travel to the other solar system.
Before I go further down the rabbit hole, back to the Mexican cartels. The GFP’s founder, who is also in the US military, decides to lead his men in several raids against the biggest drug cartels and take all of the funds and assets they have. That way, he rids the world of vermin and gains the funds he needs to undertake his insane dream that could pit him against his own government and country.
To be honest, I’m surprised we don’t hear stories about, at the very least, mercenaries hitting Mexican drug cartels and taking everything of value. After all, aside from the corrupt Mexican government, who is going to miss those scum?
And that is how the book, if I were to write it, would be about how a man began his quest to leave earth and found an interstellar government. He and his men raiding a cartel’s headquarters and forcing the leader to give him access to the bank accounts, cash, gold, jewelry, and valuable things in the mansion.
Of course, I still haven’t finished the rough draft for The Flames of Elysium, but I wanted to share this little tidbit.
If that wasn’t enough, I also created a Terran race called the Galactic Federation of United Planets in strategy game Stellaris, though I made it a theocratic monarchy rather than a constitutional republic with a symbolic monarchy. Oh, I didn’t mention it. A while after his passing, there was a vote that was unanimously approved of to declare his family royalty with the titles and benefits that it all entails (he would have loathed the idea, which is revenge from the government for him naming their government the GFUP).
Still…the results speak for themselves if the few achievements I have unlocked have anything to say.
But what do you think about how the main character would go about gathering lots of money?
What do you think about the little tidbits I have disclosed about the origin surrounding the GFP?
Let me know!
