If you always thought you had what it takes to be a Roman centurion then you’ll want to check out Never Second in Rome which just marched onto Steam Early Access. Created by solo developer Alessandro Roberti, Never Second in Rome is a turn-based historical game that features RPG and management elements as well.
The game is set right before the start of the Gallic War. The Republic of Rome currently dominates the Mediterranean world though it is struggling with internal strife as a result of its civil war.
As a Roman Centurion in the army of Julius Caesar himself, players will control their centurion and take command of their century (not the period of time but a roman unit of around 80 soldiers). In this role, you will have to train both your character and men, appoint staff, and look for the most able individuals in your service. Players will also need to keep track of the soldiers when it comes to health, morale, fatigue, and other factors to make sure they are ready for combat.
Players will then have to lead their soldiers into combat and participate in real historical battles that are recreated via a system of stats and turn-based combat. The game also features text-based events and narrative sections which will involve attribute and skill checks.
Never Second in Rome is now available on Steam Early Access for $9.99. There is also a demo for those wishing to check out the game before purchasing it.
