Riot Games have announced that League of Legends is now hosting more than 4 million players every day, an increase of 280 percent since July.

Other statistics show that LoL has 11.5m monthly active players, 30m registered users, and 1.3m people playing at the same time. The number of monthly gamers means that Riot’s multiplayer online battle arena game has surpassed Blizzard’s recently reported 10.3m registered users for their popular World of Warcraft MMO.

Riot president Marc Merrill said,

“It’s staggering to think about the fact that over a billion games of League of Legends have been played since launch. In 2012, we intend to deliver even more for our growing audience.”

The popular MoBA game will soon open League of Legends: Season Two where teams will compete for a $5m prize pool, the largest in eSports history.
