Heart Shaped Games has announced that We Are The Caretakers, a new sci-fi grand strategy RPG, has launched on Xbox and Steam. The game, set in an afrofuturist world, sees players take on the role of a Caretaker, sworn to protect the Shadran society and their endangered Raun species from high-tech poacher factions.
In We Are The Caretakers, players will be able to deploy fully customized squads of Caretakers into the field, manage the roster, and take part in turn-based combat in order to protect the Raun and their home. As part of the game’s reputation system, players will also be able to recruit detained poachers, but will have to consider the ramifications of doing so since it will not be the most popular decision and may make future missions more difficult.
The game features more than 30 job classes to choose from, and multiple ways to upgrade characters, to be used for assembling squads to help deal with a total of 40 campaign missions and a narrative that presents players with morally complex choices. The world of We Are The Caretakers blends elements of man-made and organic science fiction, with a soundtrack that combines epic orchestral sounds, African instrument samples, and modern hip-hop beats.
“We can’t wait to finally reveal the exciting last chapters of our campaign to our Steam audience and players on Xbox for the first time!” said Heart Shaped Games founder Scott Brodie. “The vision that the team is bringing to We Are The Caretakers is a rich sci-fi world with an underlying focus on conservation that’s like no other.”
We Are The Caretakers retails for $19.99, with an additional 10% discount for early supporters. In addition, 10% of net revenue from purchases of the game will be donated to the Wildlife Conservation Network’s Rhino Recovery Fund.
